The price of gaming
As a PC gamer I often find the current prices of games to be quite ridiculous. Sometimes new games can cost up to R500, for something that you only take about 2 weeks to complete. This has led me down “the dark path of Captain Sparrow” more often than not, as I have a huge problem shelling out half a grand for something that may or may not be useful to me after a fortnight. That is not to say that I don’t purchase games. I merely wait until they are available at a more acceptable (bargain bin anyone) price.
With this in mind I was quite impressed with two games developers decisions regarding the price of their games.
First off, World of Goo reached its first anniversary this week and is currently offering the game at whatever price you feel prepared to pay for it. It’s more along the lines of a donation and a few simple clicks later I have purchased my copy of World of Goo at a price I can afford and think is reasonable. Not the mention that the game was only $20 (about R150) to begin with.
Secondly a new game called Torchlight, from a team made up of the creators of Diablo and Fate, will soon launch at a mere $20. I’m sure this game will give me hours of endless fun for only R150.
I hope that more and more game developers follow this trend, turning gaming back into a fun hobby as opposed to the wallet draining exercise it has become.
